Must read for those who follow mintages: If you have any '08 proofs, Eagles Buffs Plats or W unc's, life's even sweeter than you thought: Nearly every one of them has been revised DOWN! THere are so many keys in here I can't comment in one post. THis link from NN is confirmation of a rumor from a reliable guy on another forum who already posted these #'s a couple days ago -- he got almost every one of them right! Go look:

I do yes, but the 970 is the single coin mintage... add the coins included in the 4 coin sets and it's 2253. I'm not all that excited about it yet really --- APE's need alot more collector interest at this point and there are so many sub-5000 APE issues they are all kind of muddled together. On paper the 1/2 oz. 08-W unc. is the new king though. The mint revising the 4 coin sets down by almost 900 is what changed the whole picture.

How can they list only 3237 1/2 oz "W" Buffaloes and 5209 1/2 oz "W" Eagles when they list 7622 double prosperity sets which contained one of each??

Yes all the the 08 non-W buffalos are bullion issues and they are common.

The 08'-W unc. AGE 4-coin set seems a real sleeper to me. It contains the deep-key 1/10th and the key of the whole series 1/4, and semi-keys 1/2 and 1 oz. Every coin in there is desirable for a AGE collector. How many of these sets will be/have been cannibalized to sell off or slab these individual keys?
Only 2851 sets when the next lowest set is the '07-W unc. at 8178. The mint's yearly four-coin proof sets are pretty popular and usually sell at 16,000 or way more.

I'm not even gonna address the new #'s from the '08-W unc. Buffalos as they are monsters to begin with, the 1 oz. being the lowest mintage ounce gold coin since 1915 or so and a huge key and the fractional W's being one-year type coins are monsters themselves, among the last coins I would ever sell.
As ref. above, I see the '08-W's unc. AGE as deep keys because:

The 1 oz. mintage is over 50% lower than the next lowest 1 oz. AGE ('01 PR $50 = 24,555). Yes the '06 Reverse proof is a little lower and that coin sold out in a matter of hours at the mint.
The 1/4 oz. is obviously the key to the whole series & even in absolute terms at 8883 is lower than some very ugly silly and uninspired modern commem. gold coins.
The 1/2 oz. is merely a semi-key since the '07-W unc 1/2 is lower, but it seems the reputation of the other '08's drags it along price -wise. The '08's are selling for much more than the '07's currently on ebay, but that may change. My guess is that people continue to look at the sales reports for the '08 and keep forgetting to add the 7700+ coins included in the double prosperity sets, so it looks like a key coin.
The 1/10th oz. mintage is almost 50% lower than the next lowest 1/10 oz'er ('07-W unc. $5 24,300).

I was late to the game, but once I caught on: I placed a large order, from the Mint, for the double prosperity sets... And, a week or so later they canceled everyone's orders.....

If those numbers are correct, that means the 2008-W 1/4oz. Gold Eagle has a total mintage of 8883 coins(including the 4 coin sets). That makes it a lower mintage than the 08-W one ounce unc. buffalo.

That means it's also the lowest mintage gold coin since the 1933 saint gaudens.

I just did a quick check of the ones on ebay, HOLY COW!!

They are like $1200 and higher.

Mine is a MS70 NGC. I got it for like $450 last year. I only bought it cause it was the lowest mintage eagle. I should have bought several.

I bought 2 of those 08W $10 GAEs this year for $500 ea because someone on here posted the low mintage # and I hoped that eventually they would start performing like the W Buffalos fracs. If I had more $ at the time I would have bought 10. I bought a lot more of the $5 08 w GAEs because they were only $200 for ms70s. I also bought all the other 08 Ws I could find the cash for. I bought at least 2 of each so that I wouldn't mind selling one to reinvest in something else that I think will do well in the future.

I'm waiting for more people to start noticing the 08 W PAEs. It will only take a very small # of collectors to push that market sky high because of the very low w mintage numbers. At least that is what I hope for but I'm a complete amature at this and I have diversified with bullion in case I'm off in my thinking. The coins are what keeps me learning, interested and motivated.

I went back and checked eBay prices and they have moved up a lot over the past month, maybe because of the new mintage #s. I was a bit shocked at the increase in some of the stuff like the $10, $25 and $50 08 W MS70 PAEs

I didn't check completed listings but the BIN prices are much higher than I remember.

Check these asking prices on the 08 W $10 GAE! ranging from $1,419 BIN to $2,499 BIN. They were $500 just a few months ago for MS70s!
Here's a completed listing for one that is MS69 for US $1,299, going crazy like the Buffs now :)

I just got another Pt $50 '08-W unc. for kicks, slabbed this time, for a nice price.
Passed on a Pt $100 '08-w unc. at a coin show for $1550, but that was a couple days before the new revelations, darn the luck.
A few months ago there was a GIM'er here who ordered 1/4oz. Pt eagles from APmex, dates of Apmex's choice, and they sent him 08 W-uncs! He should chime in here and gloat.

There was a NGC MS70 $50 08-W PAE on eBay not 2 weeks ago for $1100! The guy was local to me and I offered him $1000 cash. He never responded and relisted the coin when it didn't sell for $1100 on the 1st try (3k and up on eBay now). Kicking myself because I knew but I wanted that 09 Buff Proof lol. I just don't have enough cash available sometimes.

Man did I score. I found FIVE of those Prosperity Sets - all ten coins in boxes - behind in the safe keeping place. I forgot I bought them because that what was only available when "GIM screamed 2008 BUY IT!"

And they had no PCGS/NGC numbers on them so I just stored them with the 12 2007 platinum sets that were just over a grand in 2008!

I found them for FREE!

A little OT. The 07 W GAEs and PAEs have some relatively low numbers and are not as high priced yet.

2007 Platinum Eagle Mintage
Bullion Mintage: 7,202 (1 oz), 7,001 (1/2 oz), 8,402 (1/4 oz), 13,003 (1/10 oz)
Proof Mintage*: 9,268 (1 oz), 25,239 (1/2 oz), 5,824 (1/4 oz), 7,964 (1/10 oz)
Uncirculated (W) Mintage*: 4,177 (1 oz), 3,635 (1/2 oz), 3,690 (1/4 oz), 5,556 (1/10 oz)

For the PAEs the W burnished 1/2 and 1/4 specifically. I picked up one of each NGC MS70 last night for what I think was good deal. The 1/10 are low priced too imo. One sold last night on eBay MS70 NGC Early Release for $207. I should have grabbed that one too.

2007 Gold Eagle Mintage

Bullion Mintage: 140,016 (1 oz), 47,002 (1/2 oz), 34,004 (1/4 oz), 190,010 (1/10 oz)
Proof Mintage: 51,810 (1 oz), 44,025 (1/2 oz), 46,189 (1/4 oz), 58,553 (1/10 oz)

The 07 W 1/4 and 1/2 burnished GAEs are very low numbers too imo. They haven't gone nuts yet and the 1/4 W MS70 can still be had for around $500 (got one last night). Some of the 07 stuff seem to be sleepers still imo.

I can't stress enough that I don't know much about numis or coins in general so DYOD. I have done a lot of research on the W minted stuff because it appears to have fantastic future potential imo. I do not regret purchasing any of the W stuff I've acquired. Almost all of it is doing extremely well and much better than the bullion I have.

actually "W" means weird "Weird" mint. Not to be confused with West Point and the extra step coins made for collectors in uncirculated and proof.

Nope the new "W" mint just made 702 thousand tungsten bars to represent the 281 MILLION ounces the Treasury is supposed to hold in trust for the American PEOPLE. But, we had a CHANGE recently, last January in fact: and what is wrong is now right, what is white is now black, and what was Biblical, you know, the ten commandments and such has turned into RIP off everyone.

Oh yes, don't forget, the tungsten bars well they are 1% gold covered - 24 KT. too. worth about 60 times less than 400 ounces of SILVER!

I guess we got used to not following the US Constitution Article 10 "GOLD & SILVER are the only real coined money." And now are daily clad coin tokens have even phoney gold to match in Fort TUNSTEN Knox.

I just FOUND four 2006 Proof Eagles 1 oz- 1/2oz 1/4oz 1/10 oz SETS in GIFT boxes to myself - boy,this is getting to be fun... AND they SURE went UP UP and AWAY in price, they did. Doggone IT!

YOU JUST Wait till next year and gold is $1500.00 - the "chickenpoop" mint adds in their supercut of their PREMIUM which is going up like INFLATION and PRINTING the GREEN stuff... so they will be charging an arm and a leg. A Chicken Leg? Nope half a golden "egged" (like GOLDEN EGGS!) chicken.

Think about this. Over the whole 3 years of PAE burnished production there were less than 45,000 burnished PT coins minted! No more to ever be made!
I just bought some other coins or I would trying for these at $250-275. 5,556 minted.

Yeah, it kinda sucks that *I* had to sell my 2007-W's for such a low price (I'm ghaffar23 and ghaffar24 on eBay), but I did make some money on them. I've been getting rid of any coins that aren't 2008-W, since I can't afford to have everything!

Major score over the weekend. Was able to procure 10 more '08-W unc. $10 gold eagles , & yet another '08-W unc. $50 Pt, all slabbed. Also getting rid of my '08-W unc. $25 AGE's in favor of '07-W $25 AGE's, markedly cheaper and significantly lower mintage.

I did add a lot of (5) NGC MS70 08 W $5 AGEs to the 2 I already had about a month ago.

I'm waiting on a 07 W MS70 PT unc $25 and $50 to arrive today along with 3 07 MS70 W $10 AGEs . They aren't sky high and the mintages are low.

I was watching a few 07 W $25 AGEs today because of the very low mintage # too but already bought the 3 07 MS70 W $10 AGEs. Not as low # as the $25 but still very low.

...and you got another '08-W unc. $50 PT :bear_thumb: man you did score this weekend.

I can't believe how fast the Ws I have have gone up! Got in just under the wire on some of it. I don't think it can continue at this pace very much longer.
Still deals to be had but not enough dough.

WOW I wanted those 2 $10 07 PT Ws! I spent way to much already this weekend. I didn't know you were a member here, glad to know that. I have purchased other coins from you on eBay this past year. Most of the Ws I have are 08 too but they have become to expensive lately.

I got the $10 golds and $50 plats from a dealer who has tons and tons of inventory. Around 550 for the gold I think and around 900 for the plat. I would bet these had been sitting in their vault for some time. They do so much volume and they are so busy I do not think they keep up with the trends on moderns. Their buy price on the w's are low too. They do pay very fairly for bullion of all types and pay top dollar for proof AGE's.

I lurk on here quite a bit, has very interesting reads. As far as selling goes, I'm through...it feels too bad to sell something that I know that I can't get back. But hey, one thing I've learned is that you can't have everything you want, *especially* when you have a wife...LOL! It's okay, in exchange for me selling these two 07's, I can buy whatever else I want, since I am funding a New Year's trip for her and I. Better that I do this now than later...God only knows what will happen spring 2010!

Don't feel to bad, one went a couple days earlier for $207, still dissapointed I didn't grab it.

FYI, the mint's website has FINALLY gotten around to listing the sales for the '06 thru '08 W-unc. and Proof issues in gold, plat and silver eagles, as well as the '08 W-unc. and proof buffalos. So now that these #'s may finally be regarded as 'officially official', I would expect Redbook to publish these in the 2011 edition next fall.
That's when I think it will slowly dawn on the mainstream coin community that these are something special.

The only real revelation from this link to me is the '08 silver unc.-w. Based upon relative rarity it should be trading in line with the semi-key mid -90's proof ASE's, over $100.

If any of you didn't get your fix of 2008-W ASE's they are still on sale at the mint in the 2008 United States Mint Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set (XA2) for $38.

The set includes a 2008-W and the 5 "golden toned" dollars in a nice package: Presidential dollars from P and the Sacagawea from Denver.
